Session #1: Building a Rhythmic Foundation

Explore a wealth of ideas for delivering Steady Beat and Rhythmic Subdivision lessons to your students in unique and engaging ways! These lessons are great for introductory or review settings and most can be adapted for online use or in socially-distanced classrooms. Body percussion, non-pitched percussion, found sounds, children’s literature, manipulatives, and more are demonstrated in this video montage. “Heavy Academics: Delivered Joyfully!”

Learning Targets:

  • Participants can deliver rhythmic instruction in a variety of ways, including via body percussion, non-pitched percussion, found sounds and more 
  • Participants can clarify rhythmic subdivision for students via children’s literature, folk songs, and instruments.

Session #2: Rehearsal Matters! Back to Basics for Online Learning

Description:

Greg Gilpin will be sharing a variety of teaching ideas that will stir our memories and remind us of some basic musical ideas we can easily teach on-line.   Ideas that will help you focus and streamline your remote teaching while still engaging your students. This session will include physical warm-ups to get your students up and out of their computer seats.  There will be vocal warm-ups that allow you to assess and work individually or in groups. Choreography to one of Greg’s brand new multi-cultural arrangements is included. Greg will also teach vocal work that focuses on good vowel production. Greg is also including an inspiring interview directly from Greg’s YouTube Channel with the incomparable Ruth Dwyer!

  • Participants will learn exercises and warm-ups that they can do via Zoom lessons to their students, to help them improve their singing

Session #3: Ready to Listen

Presenter:

Description:

In this section Denise shares storybooks, lessons, activities, and ear training activities that will get your students ready to become perceptive listeners.  In this session you’ll discover many ways that your students can play, move, listen, read, write, and create music even if they can’t say.   Denise will share lessons to teach children to sort non-pitched instruments into families, learn the instruments of the orchestra and the orchestral families, and many more musical concepts.

Learning Targets:

  • The participant will learn how to teach ear training and perceptive listening to the elementary students
  • The participants will learn how to teach instruments of the orchestra and orchestral families to students

Session #4: Movin’ and Groovin’

Description:

Whether children will be moving in their living rooms with your Zoom sessions or joining you in a safely-spaced classroom experience, these lessons are sure to please the students while addressing many foundational music learnings. Musical Form takes center stage in this session as children “organize their listening” via unique response opportunities.

  • Participants can design and utilize guided movement to illuminate musical form
  • Participants can incorporate a wealth of musical styles into their instruction

Session #5: Ukulele Fun

Description:

This session will teach how to get a ukulele program started in your school.  Denise shares how to choose a ukulele, the different sizes ukuleles, and what ages you can consider using ukuleles with.  You’ll learn how to teach the parts of the ukulele, string numbering, how to use a tuner, and what to do with left-handed players.  You’ll learn ways to teach finger numbering and how to teach children to read a chord chart.  You learn ways to strum and practice some strumming patterns. A sequence for teaching songs is given and you’ll learn to play songs with one and 2 chords.  Suggestions are given for how you can use ukuleles and a post-Covid classroom.  Information on disinfecting ukuleles is given and suggestions on how you can schedule ukuleles so that they can be safely used by more than one class.

Learning Targets:

  • The participant will learn the basics of teaching a beginning ukulele class
  • The participant will learn about disinfecting ukuleles and will learn how to use ukuleles in a post-COVID classroom.

Session #6: Singing Fun ‘n Games

Presenter:

Description:

Singing . . . the heart of a music program! We all hope that we can safely sing with the students in the near future, or at least bring a lot of joyful songs into children’s homes remotely. Your students will enjoy this engaging collection of lessons that address pitch, audiation, form, melodic direction, and intervals. 

Learning Targets:

  • Participants can construct lessons which reinforce vocal skills and expand students’ song repertoire
  • Participants can foster strong curricular connections between music and language arts 

Session #7: Rhythm Fun and Games

Description:

This session is for students who can read rhythms, to help them improve rhythm reading skills.  Topics will include reading rhythm flashcards, ostinato, body percussion, layering rhythms, creating cannons, and assessments.  In this session, we will use a combination of hard copy manipulatives and online options.  Games will include Poison Rhythm, Vivace vs. Allegro, The Price is Right, Flashcard Turnover, Turnover Mixup, and Rhythm Race.  You’ll have a whole year’s worth of activities for teaching, practicing, and assessing rhythm in this session.

  • The participant will learn many new strategies for teaching, practicing, and assessing rhythm reading

Session #8: The Triple Crown: Movement, Poems, and Books!

Description:

Wanna be an all-around winner in the classroom and in distance learning?  Then be a triple crown winner!  You will see a collection of movement, poetry, and book lessons in this session that will teach a variety of musical elements, such as, dynamics, solo v. ensemble, steady beat, rhythm, melodic direction, and more!

Learning Targets:

  • Students will identify dynamic levels, fermata, melodic direction
  • Students will identify instruments in the woodwind family and identify the timbre associated with that family
  • Students will classify parts of a piece of music as solo and ensemble
  • Students will identify and perform various rhythms and compare and contrast them

Session #9: Super Simple Music Centers

Description:

Everything you need to run centers successfully in the music room!  This session includes how to organize and manage your classroom, what to do the first day, tracking sheets, and center group cards.  Guidance on setting up centers for a pre-COVID and post-COVID classroom will be presented.  We will explore concepts and activities for different grade levels.  Various centers requiring minimal preparation time will be shared, as well as how to use resources on Musicplay Online for center activities.

  • The participant will learn how to implement center activities successfully in the elementary music classroom.
  • The participant will learn a variety of center activities covering many different concepts, skills, and grade levels.

Session #10: Creating Kits, Lineup Activities, and MORE!

Description:

In this section, Denise will share suggestions for what to include in an instrument kit that is affordable even if you have 500+ students.  Denise will also share activities to do with the instrument kits.  Denise will also share ways that you can have children creating with manipulatives that are individual to that student so they do not have to share materials.  Activities using these creating kits will be shared.  And part of your handout for this session will be PDF files so you can easily photocopy and make your own creating kits for your students.

  • The participant will learn how to assemble an individual instrument kit
  • The participant will learn ways to use creating kits any distanced, spaced classroom or Zoom class

Session #12: Concept Collage

Description:

Your young musicians will love these unique lessons that illuminate various musical concepts, including steady beat, rhythm, melody, timbre, and tempo. KidStix stations, beat buddies, a singing scarf, and rhythm instruments will be incorporated in the lessons.

Session #13: Love to Listen

In the session, participants will learn how to use active listening strategies to engage the students and to make listening to classical music a requested activity.  You will learn how to keep kids in music class playing, moving, listening, reading, writing, and creating music even if you can’t soon.  You will learn how to use a variety of listening logs and listening glyphs.  You will learn how to use “Music Monsters” and how to draw a lot of contour to a variety of selections.  You will learn how to do an intercom listening program at your school.

Session #14: Using FlipGrid

Description:

Connect with every music student using FlipGrid!  Kathleen Theisen will help you learn how to create and post videos that encourage your students to respond within this highly interactive website. 

Learning Targets:

  • Learn how to set up a GRID 
  • Learn how to share videos of yourself teaching MusicPlay materials and post on FlipGrid 
  • Learn how to share the FlipCode with students 
  • Learn how to set the grid so that student videos are private or viewable by classmates 
  • Learn how to use FlipGrid for assessments within the national standards 

Session #15: Listening Fun with Scarves and Tennis Balls

Description:

Learn rhythmically expressive movement routines to classical music using scarves and tennis balls (NOT at the same time!). Each routine can be learned, taught, and performed in a 30-minute music class. Several lesson delivery methods will be explored. The music of Bach, Grieg, Mendelssohn, Mussorgsky, and others will be experienced. Through active, creative, and meaningful participation, your students will explore music in ways they (and you!) may have never thought were possible!


Session #16: Adapted Singing Games Part 2

Description:

This session will teach many different kinds of games and ways that games can be adapted for use in the post-class.  You’ll learn some names games that can be adapted and he used in fall 2020 and some community-building activities that you can use to get to know your students better.  You’ll learn how to adapt games and use them as creating or music literacy activities.  Some games will become listening activities that you can use to teach children to read, sequence, and improve reading comprehension.  You’ll learn games that teach beat and rhythm that involve no touching and no singing.  You’ll learn ways to modify passing games such as “Button you must wander” or “Bee Bee Bumblebee” so that you can still use the game and teach music literacy concepts from that game.

Learning Targets:

  • The participant will learn how to teach beat and rhythm using a simple singing game
  • The participant will learn ways to build community and get to know students in a distanced classroom
  • The participant will learn ways to adapt a traditional singing game to become a literacy activity that will teach sequencing, reading, and reading comprehension
  • The participant will learn games to teach beat and rhythm and composing without any singing or touch

Session #17: Where There’s Passion, There’s Retention!

Session #24 – Making Music, Literacy, and Movement Fun for Everyone

Description:

In their session, Making Music, Literacy, and Movement Fun for Everyone, participants will learn how to teach their students various music concepts through singing, playing instruments, listening, moving, reading, and creating. Participants will have the opportunity to observe videos of children groups presenting some of the selections from Christie’s and Tracy’s books.

Learning Targets:

  • Teachers will learn how to take a piece of literature and make it come alive through their music program.  Suggestions will also be given for adapting lessons for re-entry scenarios surrounding social distancing and online learning.

Session #25 – Strictly Warm-ups! For all ages…

This session will give you exposure to one set of choral warm-ups as well as tricks and tips for your groups.  Basic set up for you to be hands-free to be able to work closely with your individual students.  In this unique time, you will have a source for your young singers to be able to follow along or use at home.

  • Participants will be able to warm-up a choir in 8 minutes.
  • Participants will be able to demonstrate healthy choral practices.
  • Participants will be able to use technology for in-class or virtual setting

Session #26 – Teaching Guitar/Band/Choir Virtually

Description:

This session will review the use of google classroom and techniques for using google meet to run choir, band, and guitar.  With the change to virtual classrooms, many music teachers had to figure out how to deliver class through the computer screen.  There is no perfect technology for this, however, you can still have meaningful, authentic learning experiences online.  

Learning Targets:

  • Participants will be able to understand the basics of google classroom.
  • Participants will understand how to set up a google meet.
  • Participants will be given the steps to teaching virtually.
  • Participants will be exposed to virtual band & choir production.

This was Wednesday webinar #1 originally aired on May 27th. In this webinar, Denise talked about individual instrument kits and ways that you can use them.  Denise talked about ways to modify activities that you use now to keep kids safe.  Some songs to teach healthy habits were introduced.


Session #28 – Fun Movement Activities for Zoom Lessons or Spaced Class

This was Wednesday webinar #2 originally aired on June 10.  In this webinar, Denise shared many movement activities that you can use either in person spaced classrooms or for zoom Lessons.  In this session, there were finger plays, action songs, dances that can be done without touching, and body percussion.  There was also movement to music.  Even if you can’t sing, movement and action songs are still fun for the students – Movement is always fun.  New healthy habits songs with fun movements were introduced in this session.
